Your First DeFi Session Starts on the Exchange Payout Screen

Guides · 2026-10-14

DeFi protocols do not connect to your exchange balance. To lend, swap or provide liquidity, the funds must sit in a wallet you control, such as a browser extension or mobile wallet. Getting them there is the first real risk point of the whole journey, because a withdrawal sent on the wrong network or without gas for the next step can leave coins stranded. A careful withdrawal routine makes the rest of your DeFi experience much calmer.

Set up the wallet on the right network

Install a reputable self-custody wallet from its official app store listing or browser extension store. Write the recovery phrase on paper and store it offline; never type it into a website. Then decide which blockchain the protocol runs on and make sure the wallet is set to that network. Copy your receiving address from the wallet for that specific network. Many wallets use the same address format across several compatible chains, which is convenient but means the network selection on both sides is what decides where the coins actually land.

Withdraw on a matching network

On Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget, open the withdrawal screen for the coin and choose the same network your wallet and the protocol use. Paste your wallet address and read the withdrawal cost and minimum shown on screen. Save the address in the exchange address book for future use. Send a small test first and confirm it arrives in the wallet.

Do not forget the gas token

Every transaction on a blockchain requires the network's native token to pay for gas. If you withdraw only a stablecoin, your wallet may hold no gas and you will not be able to move or use it. Withdraw a small amount of the native token on the same network as well. The exchange withdrawal screen lists it under its own coin name. Some exchanges label a network by the coin name and others by the chain name, so double-check that the native token you withdraw is on the same chain as the stablecoin.

Confirm before going further

Check the wallet balance and the transaction on the network's block explorer. Make sure the token shown is the genuine one; scammers sometimes airdrop worthless tokens with similar names. Only then connect the wallet to the DeFi protocol you have researched, approving spending limits no higher than you plan to use.
