Keeping exchange apps separate from wallet browser extensions
People who use decentralised finance often have several wallet extensions installed in their browser, along with tools for tracking positions and connecting to applications. Many of the same people log in to centralised exchange accounts in that very browser. That combination puts two kinds of accounts within reach of any malicious or compromised extension. Keeping exchange access separate, ideally in the official mobile app or a dedicated browser profile, is a simple way to reduce that exposure. This guide explains how for Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget users. It does not recommend any wallet or extension.
Why mixing is risky
Browser extensions can request broad permissions, including the ability to read and change content on the pages you visit. A malicious extension, or a genuine one that is later compromised, could in principle observe logins or alter addresses on pages. When your exchange sessions and your wallets share a browser, a single bad extension can affect both. Separation limits the damage any one problem can cause.
Use the official app for exchange access
Install the exchange app from your phone's official store, checking the publisher name against the help centre, and use it as your main way to access the account. Mobile apps run separately from browser extensions. Where you need desktop access, consider a separate browser profile that has no wallet extensions installed and is used only for exchange accounts.
Keep the extension list short
In your DeFi browser profile, review installed extensions regularly and remove anything you no longer use or do not recognise. Install extensions only from the official browser store and check the publisher carefully. Avoid installing extensions recommended in chats or comment threads. Fewer extensions means fewer opportunities for something to go wrong.
Check addresses across contexts
When moving funds between an exchange and a wallet, copy addresses from the receiving side and compare characters at the start, middle and end after pasting. If you notice an address changing unexpectedly, stop and review your extensions and device. Use the exchange withdrawal allowlist so funds can only leave for addresses you have approved in advance.
Risk boundary: DeFi Protocol Guide
Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
Scenario checkpoint
- Use the official mobile app as your main way to access exchange accounts
- Keep a separate browser profile without wallet extensions for exchange logins
- Remove unused or unrecognised extensions from your DeFi profile regularly
- Install extensions only from the official store after checking the publisher
- Turn on the exchange withdrawal allowlist before moving funds to wallets
