Withdrawing from an exchange to a multisig or smart-contract wallet: checks first

Sending funds from Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget to a multisig or smart-contract wallet works differently from a regular address. Which network to pick, how to confirm the wallet exists on that chain and why a test transfer matters even more here.

Multisig and smart-contract wallets are popular with DeFi users for good reasons: shared control, spending limits and recovery options a single key cannot offer. Sending exchange funds to them is usually straightforward, but it carries a risk that regular wallets do not. A smart-contract wallet exists at its address only on the chains where it has been deployed. Its address may look identical on another network where no contract exists, and funds sent there can be very hard to recover. A careful exchange withdrawal starts with confirming the chain.

Confirm where the wallet is deployed

Open your multisig or smart-contract wallet interface and check which network it is deployed on. Many such wallets use the same address format across EVM chains, so an address on one chain may not be controlled by your contract on another. If you plan to receive on a particular network, make sure the wallet is deployed there first, or deploy it before withdrawing. Copy the address from the wallet interface while the correct network is selected, and label it with that network in your notes.

Choose the matching network on the exchange

On the exchange withdrawal screen, select the coin and then the network that matches your wallet's deployment. Read any notes on the screen; some exchanges mention whether withdrawals to contract addresses are supported for a given coin or network. Check the fee and minimum shown for that network. If the network you need is not offered for the coin, do not pick a different one that looks similar; withdraw to a regular wallet you control on a supported network and move the funds onward yourself.

Test transfers and gas considerations

Send a small test amount first and confirm in the multisig interface that it arrived and is visible as a balance. Some contract wallets need the receiving transaction to execute contract code, and exchanges may set gas limits that work for normal addresses but not for every contract; a test reveals this before larger amounts are at stake. Make sure the multisig signers hold enough of the network's gas token to move funds later, since that is not something the exchange provides.

Address book and allowlists

After a successful test, add the multisig address to the exchange's withdrawal address book with a clear label naming the wallet and network, and enable the allowlist if you use one. Expect a security hold after adding a new address. Keep a record of the deployment networks of each wallet you control, the signer set and the date of the last successful test. When signers change or a wallet is redeployed, repeat the test before sending substantial funds.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Confirm on which networks your multisig or smart-contract wallet is actually deployed.
  • Select the exchange withdrawal network that matches the wallet deployment and read any contract notes.
  • Send a small test and confirm the balance in the wallet interface before larger amounts.
  • Save the address in the exchange address book with its network label and enable the allowlist.
